Talk of an unrated cut for 31 may make many fans wait for Blu-ray, but then they should buy in quantity, as horror fans tend to be loyal and devoted to their favorites, and likely to want to buy a loaded disc full of extras (Anchor Bay, ironically, is known for rereleasing the same horror titles over and over, with new bonus features each time).ģ1 debuted at Sundance to mixed reviews, and in advance of its proper theatrical release in a couple of weeks, was given a special Fathom events screening nationwide last night, in a package that included some bonus music videos, an interview with Zombie, and a preview of the making-of documentary that's sure to be on the home-video release. (It usually doesn't, but as a rock star who's also an adept director, Zombie is a unique case.) Not all the budget needs recouping, though: fans who helped the crowdfunding did so not to get an investment back, but to be rewarded with exclusive artwork, T-shirts, and the like, per the usual terms of such things. As the former grossed around $2.5 million and the latter over $4m, $1.5 should easily be within reach for 31 around Halloween time, though we'll have to see if a "star director" without a big-name lead counts the same. 16th, followed by limited theatrical October 21st. We can look at their two domestic theatrical platform releases in conjunction with Roadside Attractions: the star and auteur driven The Homesman (Tommy Lee Jones directing and acting) and A Hologram for the King (Tom Hanks acting, Tom Tykwer directing).
However, it's impossible to tell what it might likely make as Saban does not release numbers on releases that debut as premium VOD, which 31 will starting Sept. You'd hope any company ought to be able to get it at least to make back the budget, especially since this is a return to precisely the sort of material people expect from Zombie, for better or worse. 31 is being distributed by Saban, and while the budget for 31 is unreported as yet, Zombie has said it was lower than Lords, and it was also supported with two crowdfunding campaigns.
